Somewhere in an Indian city right now, an elderly parent is home alone while their only child checks in by video call from another time zone– present in conversation, absent in the moment a fall or a health scare would actually need someone there. That gap, repeated across millions of households, is fast becoming the norm.
India’s elderly population is projected to grow from around 149 million to 347 million by 2050, nearly a fifth of all Indians. What’s changed just as sharply is how they live. A 2026 analysis of Periodic Labour Force Survey data found that about 20% of India’s elderly (roughly 30 million people) now live entirely alone or with only another elderly person for company.
