From a Terrace Room to 1.5 Lakh Families: The Anvayaa Journey, 2016 to 2026

Every mission has a backstory. Ours begins with a son who chose his parents over a life abroad.

Prashanth Reddy was an only child living in the United States when the worry that sits quietly inside every NRI grew too loud to ignore. His parents were ageing in India. He was ten time zones away. Phone calls could carry love, but they could not carry a parent to a doctor, or sit with them through a lonely evening, or reach them at 3 a.m. when something went wrong. So he came back. And in that decision, Anvayaa was born.

2016: Four people, one terrace, and an idea India didn’t have

Anvayaa started the way most honest things do: small. Four people in a small terrace room in Hyderabad, running entirely on caffeine and pure panic.

The idea was simple to say and enormously hard to build. Care for elders existed in India, but only in pieces. A hospital for emergencies. A home attendant service through one agency, home nurse services through another. What no family could find was one place to call for everything their parents needed: health, home, companionship, emergencies, paperwork, festivals, everyday life. Anvayaa set out to become India’s first one-stop elder care service at home.

The early struggles were the kind no pitch deck prepares you for. Elder care was not yet a category families understood, so every first conversation was an education. Parents insisted they were fine. Children abroad wondered whether a caretaker for the elderly at home, a stranger at first, could truly be trusted with their mother’s medicines and their father’s moods. Trust of that kind cannot be advertised into existence. It has to be earned slowly: with every family served, every emergency answered, every promise kept.

So that is how it was earned. Slowly, visit by visit, the strangers became familiar faces. The familiar faces became sons and daughters. And the first families who took a chance on a four-person startup are still with Anvayaa today. In every city we entered, our first member remains a member. There is no award we hold more precious than that.

2019 and 2020: The world takes notice

By its third year, the work had begun to speak for itself, and it spoke far beyond Hyderabad. In 2019, Anvayaa was named among the UN Global Top 10 in Seoul, recognition that a small team building a senior care service in India was solving a problem the whole world is ageing into. Honours followed at home: Best Startup recognition from IIT Madras, the HYSEA 10X Product Award, support from the Government of Telangana, and Entrepreneur of the Year at the HMA Awards in 2020.

Then the pandemic arrived, and with it the hardest test of our promise. When the pandemic locked the world indoors, our members were the most vulnerable people in it, and their children were further away than ever. Those months made our purpose brutally clear. Elder care is not a convenience. It is a lifeline. When the world stayed home, our care managers stepped out, because somebody’s parents were waiting.

The technology years: care that arrives before the call

The decade’s second half was about a question: how do you protect someone in the minutes before anyone knows they need protecting?

Abhay, our patented senior smartwatch, watches over vitals around the clock, detects falls, and triggers help automatically. Manas brought structured, compassionate at-home dementia care services to families facing the hardest journey of all. Nishchint extended care to the parents of working professionals through their employers. An IRDAI-approved insurance vertical rounded out the circle, and partnerships in wellness, spiritual care, and pain relief continue to widen it.

The numbers behind the technology tell their own story. Thousands of medical emergencies handled across the decade, with 97% reached on time. Every percentage point in that figure is a night someone’s father was not alone.

2026: The decade in one room

Kritagnya-10years of care

This July, at Kritagnya, our tenth anniversary celebration, the whole journey stood in one ballroom. The care managers who built the trust. The elders who walked the ramp with sunglasses on and stole the entire evening. Padma Shri Dr. Brahmanandam, who called Anvayaa something “built with such a noble and genuine intention.” Dr. S. K. Joshi, IAS (Retd.), who told us, “You have done a great job. Society is thankful to you’’. To every family, team member, and well-wisher who walked this decade with us, thank you. Kritagnya was named for you.

Ten years on, the four-person terrace team has grown to around 150 people serving over 1.5 lakh families across 38+ cities, in 20+ languages. But the measure we care about has never changed: does a family sleep better because Anvayaa exists? A lakh and a half times over, the answer has been yes.

The road to 2036

The dream that began with one son and two parents now points somewhere much bigger: a senior-citizen-friendly India, where dependable elder care reaches not just the metros but tier 2, tier 3, and tier 4 towns, wherever parents are ageing, and children are worrying.

We do not know exactly what the next ten years hold. We know what we will be doing through all of them. Showing up. Answering the call, treating every elder like our own.

The first decade was a promise kept. The next one starts now.
